What Insurance Group Is Your Car

Most motorists in UK don't even know the insurance group for their car. It's very important to know the insurance group for your car when it comes to motor insurance.

Here a Quality Quote we try our hardest to advice all our readers and customers about motoring and alert them about important motoring information. This page explains how your car group works and how car insurance can be more expensive when compared with a very similar car like yours.

Firstly, when a car is manufactured it is given a insurance group number. The insurance group is normally 1 to 20. A typical example of a group 1 would be a Fiat Panda and a group 20 would be a sports car such as a Ferrai, Bentley, Porsche etc.

Now, when it comes to the insurance company rating the risk, they analyse the risk in various parts. Driver, area, convictions, accidents etc. One of the most important factor is the insurance group of your car. Judging from the obvious, if you drive a Fiat Panda, you will surely pay more on insurance in comparision to an owner of a Ferrari sports car.

The reason why all cars have groups is because of the general risk and performance of the car. When we say risk it means the theft risk, general safety of the car indluding air bags etc and many more risk factors. Performance is another area which can make a difference on the group rating. Once again, the faster the car, the higher the insurance group.

Here's a typical example of how the same engine BMW can make a difference on group rating.

1991 BMW 325i Sport = Insurance Group 15

1991 BMW 325i Sport Convertible = Insurance Group 17

Engine cc = 2.5 (2500cc)

As you can see from the example above, the convertible vehicle which is the exact same engine size but rated 2 groups higher. This is because of the theft risk and safety in an event of an accident.

Insurers will also request a higher excess for high group vehicles, and even more higher for convertible cars. High group vehicles also require good security. Either Cat 1 or 2 immobiliser. Some companies require a Tracker system. Please make sure you verify this clause with your insurer as your car insurance policy can be void if you have not added security if required.
