Driving In Snow Tips

Not all of us have experienced driving in snow, well lets face it not all of use really live in Scandinavia or Canada!  How can you team snow driving tips with driving safely in bad weather?  That was easy, and we did it just for you:

Every single year, motorists old and young get thrown by the weather.  Icy weather really makes the majority of us drive slowly and safely, though driving in snow  should really gear us up to drive cautiously – or not at all. Here are our couple of snow driving tips, we hope you remember these when you are next driving in snowy conditions.

Preparing for Winter
Remember to top up with anti-freeze – this can get you out of a number of situations – and also remember to fill up your windscreen tank with a suitable anti-freeze liquid too. The last thing you need is to be driving on the motorway and not being able to use your windscreen spray to get rid of the dirt on your windscreen.

Ensure your de-misters are working and that you leave time to spare each morning when you set off if you have a routine to stick to -driving in snow is awful once you see you still have half of it on your windscreen or bonnet.

Before Driving in Snow
Don't set off until your car has warmed up – this can give your windscreen and your headlights time to shake off snow you have forgotten to remove. The police take a very dim view of people who clear a little hole in their windscreen and set off hoping that the rest will defrost along the way.

Remember not to tackle a hill if a) you are not used to driving in snow and b) your car simply does not have enough power or grip to get up there.  You will know to avoid steep hills if you have an older car that perhaps has little power (i.e. 1,000 c.c. or 1 litre cars are great on fuel and tax bills, but not great at tackling steep climbs!).  Also remember to stay well clear of the car in front, just in case that car is struggling to get over the top of the hill.

Caution
Do please remember, before driving in snow, to check that your exhaust pipe isn't filled with snow.  If it is, and you decide to sit in your car until it's heated, then you are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Yes, this may seem a rare occurrence though it happens too often.

However the best snow driving tip that we can offer is: DON'T GO OUT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO!!

There are a lot of people who will pop down the shops when the roads are still iced up and risk life and limb to get into work when they don't really need to. We hope our snow driving tips help you think before you take to the roads in winter.
